Beschreibung:
The first book of its kind to analyse and bring to the forefront of policy making the linkages between globalisation and the role of women in development in Africa. The most effective way to ensure increased and sustainable development in Africa is through the improvement of African women's skills and by ensuring they receive access to tools such as credit, training and technology. Understanding and supporting the potential of African women in the context of the new economic realities facing Africa is crucial to the future of the continent's economic development. However, political, legal and cultural impediments to women's full participation in economic and political life remain in place in many African countries. The essays collected in this book put an emphasis on practical solutions to these issues. It aims to become a policy manual that will help disseminate strategies, conclusions and recommendations to NGOs, national and international government agencies, businesses, women's groups, international educational organisations and academic institutions. I. Perspective: Introduction (S. 3); II. Impact of globalization on women in Africa: Conceptual issues: Mina Baliamoune-Lutz: Globalization, economic growth and gender inequality (S. 13); Shadrak Nasong'o: Women and economic liberalization in Kenya (S. 33); Gayle A. Morris, Mahir Saul: Women cross-border traders in West Africa (S. 53); III. The empowerment of women in Africa: Sylvain H. Boko, Rosita Najmi: Assessing the impact of women's participation in microfinance programs in Benin (S. 85); Bola O. Akanji, H. M. Ogunwumiju: Land rights, land use and trade (S. 95); IV. Boko: An assesement of women's contribution to an air pollution (S. 145); Sitawa Kimuna: Elderly women, economic growth and development in Sub-Saharan Africa (S. 159); V.
