| The political climate in Europe regarding immigration and Islam in particular have made the prospects for multicultural feminism look dim, yet more necessary than ever. Feminist coalition building across cultures seems to be caught between the devil and the deep blue sea of either universalism or anti-essentialism. Against moral relativism this paper argues that feminists should speak out against cultural practices that are harmful to women. Yet, when we criticize other cultures there is the typical risk that we use double standards, that we essentialize cultures and that we speak for, and thereby deny the agency of, minority women. Taking the struggle against female genital cutting as a case in point, the paper demonstrates that these pitfalls can be avoided by the concepts we use, e.g a contentneutral conception of autonomy, and our methodology, e.g. cross-cultural comparison and contextualized analysis. | |
