| The Fourth World Conference on Women (FWCW) that was held in September 1995 in Beijing, China was a watershed in the struggle for gender equity and equality, and particularly, for women’s empowerment at national, regional and subregional levels. In the Southern African Development Community (SADC), the build-up to the 10-year review of the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (BDPFA) proved to be fertile ground for consolidating a number of issues and approaches to accelerate the status of women in southern Africa. This publication gives a snapshot of the achievements, challenges, and agenda for the future regarding the Beijing process, interwoven with the voices of some of the women activists in southern Africa. | |
