| "What are the differences that make the difference?" asked Gregory Bateson in his "Steps to an Ecology of Mind" (1972). Modern western tradition tends to place the difference between the sexes in such a dominant position that the opposite sex can assume the almost metaphysical quality of the totally opposite. Further differences - like those between big and small, dead and living, or human and non-human creatures - can then be viewed as mere modifications or appendices to the gender-patteern. What is the background of this conceptual situation? Is it part of our "dominator" form of society? What are its psychological, social, ecological and political effects? | |
