| The professional image of nurses represents a relatively underresearched area in feminist historiography. The clichéd image of the nurse is too close to those "typically feminine" characteristics with which women have to serve male interests in many other areas. This article gives an insight into the development of the Austrian image of the neat and tidy nurse who recognizes the doctor as highest authority. In the 19th century, the terrain between the professions concerned with medical care had not yet been clearly staked out. The monopolizing efforts on the part of the doctors, however, were becoming unmistakable. Male doctors - and they were not alone in this - frequently employed arguments based on feminity stereotypes with regard to women health-care workers. How did the women counter this? What strategies did female health-care workers adopt in order to define their profession and working conditions for themselves and to develop an independent professional sel-confidence? | |
