| The extract reprinted here begins by differentiating between the traditional form of feminism, which seeks a place and rights for women within the nation and linear history, and a more recent phase which locates the feminist struggle primarily within sexual relations. This second phase emphasises the difference between men and women, and draws on psychoanalysis as the main existing theory of sexual difference. But Kristeva's won version of Freud is profoundly modified by Lacan, so that fear of castration is precisely symbolic - the fear of loss of presence, totality, pleasure, which is consequent upon the acquisition of language as separation from nature.... | |
