Lugones raises the question of how divisions between women who are members of different social groups can be overcome. To explore these issues Lugones develops the concept of a "world" and the concept of "world"-travelling. A "world" is a social universe that has a language and norms, within which many people approve of those norms, where many of the inhabitants have afectionate ties to one another, and which endows inhabitants with a common history and common knowledge. Each "world" constructs the individuals who are in it, including "outsiders", in distinctive ways. Thus, "world"-travelling involves entering into different worlds and, as a result, undergoing changes in one's identity. Lugones tells how her failure to travel to her mother's world alienated her from her mother. Likewise, she points out that women of color in the United States are commonly obliged to travel to the worlds of White/Anglo women, but White/Anglo women seldom reciprocate and travel to the worlds of women of color. According to Lugones, loving and playful "world"-travelling is the key to breaking down barriers between women from different social groups. A loving approach requires giving oneself over to the other's world - seeing the other as she is constructed in her world and seeing oneself as one is constructed in the other's world. A playful approach requires abandoning rules, being creative, welcoming surprise, and being receptive to self-construction. "World"-travelling in this spirit enables one to see that members of other social groups have complex subjective and agentic lives that are denied in the "world" where one is at home. (D.T.M.) | |
