Beschreibung:
In the scholarship on memory, remembering and forgetting, the question of gender difference, although certainly relevant, has hardly ever been posed. The paper focusses on the absence of female authors from our literary memory. It clarifies a number of basic concepts and discusses the applicability of existing models of remembering and forgetting in the context of women's writing. A study is introduced, in which female authors of the 18th century are established as subjects in the making of a "canon" of writing women since antiquity; they were not able to extend on a long-term basis the selection already made from a male point of view. With regard to the question as to how one should react to the hegemony of the "old" canon, differences within feminism as well as differences within the conceptualisation of difference are discussed. On the basis of three examples - the forgotten type of the "Bürgerliches Trauerspiel" by women dramatists, forgotten letters written by the importang female correspondents of distinguished male authors and scholars, and one forgotten female-authored success-novel - and taking into account existing scholarship, this essay pleads for the canonical remembering of such authors and their works at least for the purpose of historical documentation.
