Recently published anthologie, reference works, and critical studies have retreived from oblivion the works of African-American women playwrights of the second and third decade of the twentieth century. Representations of the beginnings of modern American drama as dominated by white playwrights and their attempts to overcome nineteenth-century melodrama, as well as accounts of the evolution of twentieth-century African-American drama as dominated by male playwrights (both white and black) and their experments with folk plays, are both up for revision.
