The idea of a stable system of literary genres has dissolved in the light of contemporary literature and theory, namely with regard to "postmodern writing". But, as recent literary theory has shown, "genre" remains one of the central categories for the writing as well as for the (critical) reading of texts. If the category of "genre" is connected with the category of "gender" the readerly and weriterly assumptions become even more complex. The following article will investigate the use of and the challenge to the gendered genre "women's autobiography" in Lyn Hejinian's "My Life". | |
