| Although there is a substantial body of literature of mainstream and feminist theorizing on the welfare state, the limitations of the models in terms of comparative research may require us to take a different angle and see beyond the established paradigms. This article is an attempt to provide an alternative strategy with a focus on Sweden as a middle way compared to the capitalist and socialist ideal types. A strong commitment to gender equality is identified as a highly prominent feature of the Swedish model, influencing the spheres of economics, politics, and public policies. Its impact is found, among other things, in the high level of female labour force participation and women's political representation as well as in policies such as the parental leave programme, public childcare, care for the elderly and old-age pension schemes. The article also shows that although women's situation in Sweden may be better than in most countries of the industrialized world, it is still less advantageous than men's. | |
