This article discusses the problem of how to express the horror of war in such a way as to convey the reality of the experience without distorting the material through over-violent emotion. It considers the work of several women writers of fiction and journalists from the former Yugoslavia (Bosnia, Croatia and Serbia), who responded in different ways to their impulse to bear witness to the events around them. The works discussed were alll written during the war itself
