For Jean d'Arras, telling "vrayes histoires" is the expressed prupose for writing his chronicle of the house of Lusignan. The historical truth is guaranteed not just by the castles and churches Melusine built, but by the narrative logic of this tale which talks of life and suffering, of death and seeming death. Weaving together the action and theevents Jean constructs a concept of narrative truth which I call, following Lakoff, "experiential realism". This paper explores the Arras-Melusine on the basis of three categories: 1. the view of the world and the legitimation of action, 2. conflicts of loyalities and 3. concepts of truth and narrative coherence. This study emphasizes the narrative and historical complexity of this text which far exeeds that of its later adaptions | |
