Beschreibung:
The introductory scene from "Die Jüdin von Toledo" already contains all the tragedy's main themes even before the king makes his entrance: the conflict between will and instinct of Rahel's fate as suggested by the allusions to the "Song of Solomon". The dominant image of the play, the garden/oasis anticipates the death of the "Kindfrau", the inescapable guilt of the human condition, and the resultatn plea for humility and forgiveness. This essay argues that Ingeborg Bachmann's narrative "Unter Mördern und Irren" provides an analysis of mechanisms of victimization. However, Bachmann's text itself is forced to operate from within the structures it sets out to criticize. Ultimately, the text remains caught in these structures, for it can only analyze them by partly reproducing them.
