This essay explores the utility of New Historicism to feminism first by examining Louis Montrose's recent essay in "Representations", "the Work of Gender in the Discourse of Discovery," to determine how a new historicist deals with gender, and then by applying the tools of new historicist method to the writing of Ingeborg Bachmann. Montrose's essay shows that new historicism can help feminists to understand gender's function in discourse, but its methods for dealing with the relationship of discourse to non-discursive forces, of representation to reality, of writing to the conditions of its production and reception, are less well elaborated. The method thus cannot yet fully describe how history informed Bachmann's writing, how she was both a product of her society's discourses and in rebellion against them, and how her texts intervene into discourse and history, by finding new solutions to problems of representing women's experience. | |
