| Flauber's "Madame Bovary" is rife with doubles and their occurences have been well-documented: characters are paired, at times they play dual roles, their gestures often echo those of another character. On the narrative level as well, there exists what I call a duality of uncertainty in the description of characters' motives. I have been able to identify at least fifteen instances in which the narrator offers two possible motivations for a character's feelings or actions, without being able to say which is the actual cause. these instances are limited to three of the novel's major characters: Emma (9), Charles (4), and Léon (2). All fifteen passages, where the narrative voice becomes tentative, contain the conjunction "ou" or "ou bien" or the adverb "peut-être" or the expression "ou peut-être". It is unarguable that the question of Flaubertian narration is a complicated and hotly debated one. To the long list of identified narrators in "Madame Bovary", there can now be added yet another: the uncertain narrator. | |
