Dispersed through Mark Kindead-Weekes's impressive volume in the Cambridge Lawrence biography is a thesis on Lawrence and male homosexual desire. It has moved us beyond denial of the importance of the theme, discussions which focus on just a few chapters in the major fiction, and the crude claim that Lawrence was really a "repressed homosexual". the present article, however, questions Kinkead-Weekes's view that Lawrence had openly accepted his bisexuality by 1914, and, despite a period of crisis caused by his visti to Cambridge in 1915, homosexual anal sex by 1917-18. Looking closely at a full range of texts, it argues that Lawrence never wholly accepted homosexual desire. He became increasingly aware of his own cathexes, but made the effort to fashion the self to unlock the potential that he believed resided in heterosexual relationships....
