| This paper provides a narrative analysis of the emergence of the Northern Ireland Women's Coalition and of its performance at the 1996 Forum Election. Drawing on a postal survey of its candidates, it explores the opportunities and constraints that face women seeking candidacy and election in a divided society in which they have experienced a history of low electoral representation. It concludes that the informal requirements of candidacy and electability that typically disadvantage women in liberal democracies are enhanced within a context of armed patriarchy. | |
