This article seeks to explore the relationship between personal and political narratives, taking as its particular focus the life and work of the Welsh-born Mrs Bridges Adams (1855-1939). Overall Mrs Bridges Adams was at the forefront of the politics of education in England and Wales for a little over 50 years. Firstly, whe was employed as a pupil teacher, teacher and headteacher. Secondly, she served as a Labour member of the London School Board. Finally, she became a rak and file propagandist for the organised labour movement, working closely with the Trades Union Congress and the Social Democratic Federation. In particular, the paper looks at her personal life and experiences that shaped her political socialisation; as well as her conception of education and the place of internationalism and pacifism in her ideas. Finally, the idea of dangerousness is used to examine her characterisation as an "awful woman" by certain of her contemporaries. | |
