This article examines women's accounts of daily life in postwar Vienna. The broadened experience of Viennese women during the war brought about a temporary change in the relations between the sexes. During the period which immediately followed the war, the daily struggle for survival was part of women's work. The social value of household duties became very clear because these duties were essential for survival and because they were carried out in public rather than in private, in activities such as "hoarding tours". The article also emphasizes the myth of the "zero hour" (by which the Austrian state denied responsibility for the Third Reich) and examines the lasting nature of antisemitism and racial prejudice in Vienna after 1945. | |
