Beschreibung:
This article explore the ways in which femininity in the 1890s was inflected with class and race. I address the question through a detailed reading of the correspondence column of "Woman at Home", a popular woman's magazine, whose "agony aount" received letters from women in Britain and the colonies. How did her column represent femininity? How and where did such representation break down and become silent? I argue that in the 1890s the ideal of the English Domestic Womanwas reinvented in the context of imperialis and the rise of "the new woman". The mass press, the "new journalism" of the 1880s and 1890s, was crucial site for this. It redefined the multiple meanings of "home" and their relationship to a femininity always assumed to be "English" and middle class.
