Ecofeminists must be aware of both the threats that the theories and practice of Western science hold for life on earth, as well as the goals that science shares with ecofeminism, namely to know and understand life. One way that feminists have addressed science is through their critiques, which proveide a basis for understanding many of the inconsistencies between science and feminist principles. What is now called for is the revisioning of science along feminist lines. In this paper, I draw on a feminist theory of psychological development to describe a view of cell and molecular biology that is consistent with ecofeminist tenets. Such a revisioning of cell and molecular biology is important not only for broadened access and understanding of its theories amongst those groups of individuals traditionally underrepresented in science, including women, but also for providing new insights into health and disease at all levels of life. | |
