This article focuses on elderly women in north Norway, living alone in big houses as pensioners after their husband's death. They feel loneliness but are proud of being independent and self-supportive as they were in the periods of their lives spent as busy homemakers making a living in subsistence-based households in an arctic environment. To bring up their families and for survival they needed to pinch and scrape and recycle scarce resources. These are values still giving them dignity in their lives. During their childhood, born into a fishing/farming way of life, they learned lessons of scarcity and how to survive on minimal resources. To be married and to establish a household following in their ancestors' footsteps was the most important goal for these women. Upon reflection, they are all grateful for their lives and view nature as a gift to be managed well so that it can be passed on to future generations. | |
