Beschreibung:
Based on interviews with over 60 key activists in Britain and North America, the article records memories of women who were involved in introducing women's studies into the academy. Comparisons are drawn between the British tradition of adult education and the North American experience where student activism was more significant. The extent to which the two academic systems were really different is one point for discussion. The question of whether the move into the academy could be reconciled with political radicalism is also analysed. Did a move into formal education compromise the both political activists and employed as academics in universities in North America and Britain look back on how they brought their politics into their institutions, and at how they tried to live out the ideals of sisterhood in a patriarchal institution.
