This article argues that George Eliot's famous discussion of realism in "Adam Bede" is closely linked to the novel's exploration of feminity. Realism is the ethical antidote to a Kantian aesthetic of formal beauty, just as Dinah's ethical feminity forms the proper corrective to Hetty's dangerously "impersonal" beauty. The refusal to accept the impersonal, disembodied vision of the gaze thus launches Eliot's double critique: her rejection of an aestheticized feminine beauty and her dismissal of an idealist aesthetics. | |
