Beschreibung:
The concepts of performativity and performance have moved to centre stage in recent debates in cultural studies. This article discusses the appearance of the New Woman as a ferformance but suggests that this was more a matter of necessity than choice. Using Judith Butler's influential theory of performativity it gives a reading of two of Olive Schreiner's colonial allegories "Three Dreams in a desert" and "The Sunlight lay across my bed". The reading suggests that Butler's account of the subject pays too little attention to the historical and material condiditons which limit the performance. In fact, schreiner's sense of performativity is closer to Brecht than to Butler. In her allegories she draws attention to the limits of the stage on which the New Woman could perform
