Beschreibung:
This essay considers "Persuadion" as a novel about romance and Romanticism. It analyses Austen's handlung of time, whose pressure dominates the narrative, and her preoccupation with loss, bereavement and the rituals of mourning. "Persuasion" is placed in a more insistently defined temporal and cultural context than the earlier novels. the social hierarchy is changing and the plot integrated into recent naval history. Anne's consciousness moves between late Augustan and Romantic texts: on the walk to Winthrop she sees the landscape refracted through one of Charlotte Smith's elegiac sonnets. Anne's and Wentworth's fidelity is contrasted with the partial or faithless loves and token mourning of minor characters. At the moment of reunion the narrative time-planes open out to immortality, creating an element of the transcendental. In the scene at the White Hart there is a new willingness to engage sympathetically with female isolation and mental illness.
