This article argues for a recognition of the innovative nature of Mary Lamb's stories in "Mrs Leicester's School", as well as for their importance in the development of a literature of childhood. A group of schoolgirls is encouraged by a young teacher to give their own account of their childhood experiences, not to point a moral but simply, radically, for the entertainment of each other. Though believing at first that they have nothing worth the telling, the girls construct their narratives according to a variety of different models, struggling, with varying degrees of success, to contain them within the rules of "story" and the linguistic forms made available to them by their own reading. The result is a series of narratives which operate reflexively on several levels, and by which the reader is led simultaneously to view the world from the child's perspective while recognising the inadequacy of the narrative modes through which she struggles to make sense of it. | |
