The Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library in Toronto is in the possession of a large body of hand- and typewritten manuscripts by Margaret Atwood. On the basis of this material, the article traces the genesis of "Bodily Harm" by comparing the different versions of the beginning of the novel. A detailed description and the analysis are given of the changes Atwood made, in chronological sequence, from the first documented version of the opening passage to the finally published text. First of all, the article examines the development of the title, from "The Robber Bridegroom" via "Robe Quartet" to "Bodily Harm" with regard to intertextual references to Grimm's fairytales on the one hand and to Atwood's own poem in the "Interlunar" collection on the other. The intertextual implications of the respective titels are also taken into account. The paper then moves on to the analysis of the modifications concerning the opening sentence of the novel and their influence on the implied reader's expectations and reactions. In the course of the following detailed examination of the changes Atwood made in the setting/atmosphere at the beginning of the novel (spring vs. autumn, blossoming vs. dying vegetation), the introduction of the protagonist's dilemma (illness, separation from her former parter, general communicative vacuum), and finally, the presentation of the protagonist's being menaced by violence (an unknown person has broken into Rennie's apartment and left a rope on her bed), the reader is offered insights into the novel's development from the first idea to the final version on the printed page, insights of a kind which only a study of the manuscripts and typescripts could allow
