| This survey article and research report tries to show that feminist literary criticism and narratology, despite their contrary theoretical and methodological assumptions, are not as incompatible as the fact that the practitioners of the two approaches tend to ignore each other's work may suggest. It is argued that an alliance between narratology and feminist criticism can be an important force in the current reconzeptualization of literary criticism and that afeminist poetics of narrative fiction can open up productive new possibilities for the analysis of both the relationship between novels and their cultural contexts and the feminist implications of narrative strategies. The article focuses on the substantive new issues that have been raised in recent contributions to the project of a "feminist narratology" (Lanser), pursuing two goals: to provide a systematic overview of major developments, new terminologies, and hitherto existing results produced in this field and to indicate new directions of research that have been opened | |
