| In this article female personal designations used in East Germany from the 1950s to the 1980s are described and evaluated. A selection of texts from a regional daily newspaper, a linguistic journal and individual grammar books and studies in lexicology, published in East Germany, form the database of this linguistic analysis. According to the examination of these linguistic and meta-language materials it becomes clear that linguists contributed substantially to the East German discourse on the equal treatment of women in language and that East German journalists in fact preferred non-generic language forms for the designation of female persons in all communicative events. | |
