Beschreibung:
The present study deals with the question whether the intention to work on a PhD is lower for women than for men. Important psychological mechanisms were investigated that can be assumed to be responsible for the lower PhD-intention. To work on a PhD was considered as being an action in the sense of Heckhausen (1989) or gollwitzer (1991), and processes were studied that play an important role in intention formation. Specifically, gender differences in the exprected realizability (self-efficacy, exprected sozial support) and desirability (expected consequences of a PhD on self-evaluation, evaluation by others, and emploment chances; values of these effects, intrinsic value of working on a PhD) were investigated. For the study 99 graduate students of biology and mathematics (47 women and 52 men) filled out the questionnaires. Results show that the intention to work on a PhD was lower for women than for men, an effect that could be attributed to self-efficacy, expected evaluation of a PhD by other persons and attractiveness of a university job being lower for women than for men. Most gender differences were more pronounced for mathematics than for biology.
