This essay considers why Emily Dickinson did not publish. It is argued that publication was, nevertheless, an important concern for her. The essay explores what the poems say, either literally or allusively, about publication. To assist with these readings, biographical information is introduced, and the important contexts of Puritanism and New England literature are taken into account. Contradictory factors such as Dickinson's desire for literary immortality and her privileging of secrecy make it difficult to find straightforward answers as to why she did not publish.
