In this essay the early work of the by now forgotten German author Mechtilde Lichnowsky (1879-1958) is analyzed. Reasons for her elision from literary memory are her sex and her resistance to the Nazi regime. Between 1912 and 1958 Lichnowsky wrote 18 books (novels, dramas, poems and essays). The main feature of her work is a critique of all kinds of normative regulations of society, which she attacked in the figure of the expert in her novel "Der Kampf mit dem Fachmann". Only in her second novel "Geburt", which is analysed in detail, does she connect this critique towards the gender stereotypes of her time. Demonstrating the dissociation of a female protagonist caused by the restrictive view of women as noncreative she also atempts to develop alternative models of female subjectivity linked to nature | |
