| May a Muslim woman wearing a headscarf be appointed as a teacher in the German civil service? Recently the question has been hotly debated in the media on the occasion of a case heard by the Federal Constitutional Court. In this public debate several opinions were brought forward about the meanings of the headscarf worn by Muslim women. These opinions widely differ from the meanings that Muslims themselves usually claim for the headscarf. The article shows that for Muslims the headscarf has a deep religious meaning and expresses ..chastity" as a social norm that is also known in Judaism and Christianity. It is argued that the current views expressed about the Muslim headscarf in German media are the result of a misunderstanding of what Muslim women may intend in wearing the headscarf today. This misunderstanding is caused by four main factors: 1. ignorance of the headscarf's function in the religious and social system according to the most important sources of Islamic religion, 2. thinking by stereotypes, 3. confusion between headscarf and veiling, and 4. ignorance of the wide variety of Muslim thinking in the 20th century. | |
