The second part of the article is concerned with Elizabeth Elstob's scholarly methods and achievements. Here I shall first survey her editions of Old English texts: the copiously annotated and lavishly produced edition of JEMxic's homily on St Gregory, the apostle of the English, and her unfinished edition of the complete two series of JEXhic's Catholic Homilies, which survives in manuscripts in the British Library. This will be followed by brief assessments of Elizabeth Elstob's Rudiments of Grammar, the first grammar of Old English ever to be written in English, and of her shrewd and impassioned apology for Anglo-Saxon studies, which serves as a lengthy preface to the Rudiments, and whose political topicality so far seems to have escaped scholarly attention. | |
