| In the contemporary world, spaces have become increasingly privatized, necessitating a rethinking of the crusty distinction between public and private. This has affected women who, though most are no longer bound to the home, are often subject to poor working conditions throughout the world. At the same time, capitalist privatization has invaded the home. Capitalism itself has become a phallocentric system, as the privacy of individual life is privatized by capitalist subjectivity. Parr uses Guattari's singularization of sexuality and (with Antonio Negri) his reclaiming of labour as a politicized sphere of creativity to examine this situation. These ideas are enacted in the performance art of Ana Mendieta and Teching Hsieh, who blur the boundaries between self and environment, public and private, territory and colonization. | |
