| Electoral systems and candidate gender quotas have been found to significantly influence the political representation of women. However, the existing focus on pure majoritarian and proportional systems has created an over-generalized picture of the link between electoral arrangements and descriptive representation. Distinguishing between the input (translating voter preferences into votes) and output (converting votes into seats) sides of electoral systems, this article turns to a sub-national comparison of the German Länder parliaments from 1957 to 2004 using panel regression analysis. Special attention is paid to mixed electoral arrangements combining types of candidacy. Our findings reveal a complex relationship, where the share of single-seat as opposed to party-list candidacies, candidate gender quotas, high party list district magnitudes and the effective number of parties act together. | |
