Although received in 1971 as an apolitical anachronism, Bachmann's novel "Malina" was intended to expose what she saw as the origins of fascism: Austria's repressed history and unmastered past in the psyche. In a modern world without heroes, the women of Bachmann's narratives experience firsthand the dangers of clinging to an illosory hero fantasy. At their most heroic, however, they find the courage to leave or to take a stance of integrity, showing the conviction and commitment evident in Bachmann's life and that of her own heroes, Brecht and Akhamtova. | |
