Marianne Moore's critics and peers often describe her poetry in visual terms, as geometric patterns and ornamental embellishments but assume that her use of ornament is devoid of meaning, a formal manifestation of irrationality. This article provides a corrective to this critical view by considering two influences unacknowledged in the scholarship: Vorticism and textile design. Taking Moore's poem “Ezra Pound” (1915) as my primary example, I argue that her “geometrical verse-designs” reveal an effort to reconcile a love of ornamental embellishment with the standards of aesthetic austerity promoted by her modernist peers. Drawing from the geometric patterns common to Vorticism and “primitive” textiles, Moore imbued her decorative style with attributes of strength and masculinity to legitimate her work in a sphere of production that was openly hostile to ornament. | |
