This essay focuses on the forms of testimony used by the Iranian Diaspora, in Australia, to communicate the trauma and displacement they have experienced as a result of the 1979 revolution. The Iranian Diaspora is a diverse community and is part of the broader international exodus that culminated as a result of the 1979 revolution. After the overthrow of the repressive Pahlavi regime (1925–1979) almost six million Iranians either freely chose or were forced to leave Iran. The Iranian Diaspora is from diverse ethnic and religious backgrounds: Persians, Kurds, Azeris, Arabs, Belochi, Ghshghai, Bakhtiari, Turkmen, Ghilaki, Mazandarni, as well as Muslims, Zoroastrians, Christians, Bahais, Jews, non-believers and others. The Iranian Diaspora can be split into three main historical periods. The first wave consisted of those who left after the 1979 revolution; the second wave began soon after the Iraq–Iran war (1980–1988); and the third wave includes migrants and refugees who have been leaving Iran since 1999. This essay focuses on the first wave of the Iranian Diaspora to Australia. | |
