| The article analyzes how masculinity is discursively constituted and represented in the music genre Indie which is a successful subgenre of Rock-Music. Referring to Raewyn Connell’s concept of ‚hegemonic masculinity‘, the article focuses on two questions: how are masculinity and femininity related and how is masculinity negotiated within a homosocial setting? Against the backdrop of discourse analysis the article discusses conflicting modes of representation. On the one hand, representations of gender in Indie are hierarchically organized: masculinity is defined as norm by devaluing femininity. On the other hand, masculinities within a homosocial setting are represented by a wide spectrum of characteristics: the norm of masculinity in Indie is thus enlarged. On both levels, masculinity is therefore not constituted by exclusions but mainly by normalizing processes. The article concludes discussing the effects of these processes for the representation of masculinity. | |
