Since glasnost, women's writing has flourished in Russia, yet the theme of mothers and daughters in Russian literature, which reflects the suppression of the feminine in Russian culture, has yet to receive the same critical attention as is devoted to the theme of ‘fathers and sons’. This article aims to show that mother-daughter relationships—largely ignored in Soviet-era women's writings—constitute a significant theme in the writings of contemporary Russian women. While relatively few of them have been directly influenced by feminist writings, some contemporary works depict mother-daughter relationships that can be illuminated by recent feminist and psychoanalytical theories of maternity published in the West. | |
