Juli Zeh has often been singled out as one of the most publically engaged authors of her generation. Her writings display a commitment to the social, ethical, and political value of literature, as well as a belief in the impact that authors and the literary market can have on concerns of the present. This article explores the role of the political in defining “contemporary” as a literary category through an examination of a selection of Zeh’s nonfictional and fictional works. In this, it explicates how the “desire for the political” (Lauren Berlant) emerges as a self-aware position Zeh’s reader takes up with regard to the act of reading and the experience of the present in text. | |
