| This article focuses on the transnational “moral empire” of the American branch of the YoungMen’s ChristianAssociation (YMCA) built in EastAsia during the Progressive Era. It analyzes how the scientification of physical education in the United States influenced the YMCA’s attempts to improve public health and fitness in East Asia and to assimilate Asians into the corresponding framework of amateur norms that defined “manliness”. The article’s main area of focus is the 1920s,when theYMCA had already established its network in China, the Philippines, and Japan. During this period, training Asian sports experts and ensuring that they would agree to the YMCA-defined modernization path gained in importance. | |
