| Reading Gertrude Stein’s “Melanctha”, the second story of Three Lives (1909), as a kind of medical record, this essay argues that the author creates the eponymous heroine as a mulatto hysteric by adopting the alleged symptoms and etiologies of hysteria in the early twentieth century such as wandering mind, traumatic sexual experiences, histrionic personality and homosexuality. Examining the racism and misogynism inherent in the medical theories of hysteria, this essay will demonstrate the ways in which Stein employs and manipulates representative racial and sexual prejudices of her time in the portrayal of the hysteric Melanctha. | |
