This essay considers the work of Joanna Southcott – self-proclaimed prophetess and one of the most prolific writers of the British Romantic era – as a way to identify the limitations of a recovery project that emphasizes the concurrent valuation of textual output and biographical facticity. Because Southcott insists on her position as divine amanuensis and thus refuses to claim authorship of her texts, she poses problems for a literary criticism that reclaims authors on the basis of their expression of experience. Ultimately, the essay suggests that literary history and literary criticism would do well to attend to the recovery of Joanna Southcott, though it also shows that doing so would require changing the way that such recovery proceeds. | |
