Beschreibung:
Catherine de Medici wielded significant power during the early reign of her son King Charles IX but faced unprecedented religious division at home and abroad. She found middle ground and appeased France’s Protestant Huguenot minority by granting them sweeping concessions and by working with leading Huguenots, including Admiral Gaspard de Coligny, to resettle large numbers of non-conformists in Eastern Europe and the Americas. Even though the intermittent French Wars of Religion, Spanish intervention, and a new sultan in the Ottoman Empire spoiled her plans, Catherine effectively challenged Spanish dominance in Europe and the Americas. By focusing on the well-being of the nation rather than individual religious conviction, she ensured the continuation of the Valois Dynasty.
