| The chapter focuses on contemporary 'Cinderella' narratives, namely those whicht have the Cinderella-story about the path of a female figure 'from rags to riches' in their background. Feminist critics have claimed that the image of Cinderella in the versions of both the Grimm Brothers and Charles Perrault is that of a passive andobedient girl, one unable to take her destiny into her own hands and to make her own decisions. Modern authors in feminist Cinderella narratives have createda new image of Cinderella - that of an active, self-confident and ambitious girl who desires much more than to merely marry a prince. Feminist narratives speak about the difficult ways taken by talented writers, politicans, artists, doctors, and scientists to the realization of their dreams, figures who faced all manner of obstacles that a patriarchal society had imposed on them. The narrative method of analysis employed in this chapter helps to reveal a particular type of narrator in feminist literary texts about Cinderella, as well as the gender-marked word units utilised in such retellings. | |
