The aim of this work is to study the gender of the personnel assigned to the work of cleaning clothes in Ancient Egypt. The first step was to collect iconographic documentation and the second was to gather literary and documentary texts mentioning rḫt (washermen). Examination of this corpus confirms the initial impression that laundry was indeed an almost exclusively male-gendered activity. However, the scope of this conclusion should be put into perspective. Most of the available documents concern washing operations carried out in the framework of institutions (large estates) or by specialised companies. However, the work of the Danish economist Ester Boserup shows that, in pre-industrial societies, when activities carried out by women in the domestic sphere are carried out outside the home, they are taken over by men. | |
